The host rocks are dolomites from the Morro do Calcario. Named in by Gustav Adolph Kenngott in honor of Emmanuel Ludwig (Louis) Gruner [ Ittigen, Switzerland - Ma Beaucaire, France], professor of chemistry at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Saint-Etienne and later chief mining engineer of Poitiers Department following as director of the School of Mines at Saint-Etienne.
